Search Engine Description
Below are brief descriptions of the five Search Engine types.
Student Search Engines
Student engines are databases of WWW sites that have been reviewed to contain appropriate content for the K-12 level. The definition of "appropriate" obviously varies by student age-group and community standards, but they are normally useful and recommended.
Directory Search Engines
Directory search engines are databases of web pages that have been categorized and manually entered into a directory by editors of a search engine. These search engines continually "crawl" the web with special software to look for new sites and updates. Directory searches are good for locating information that can be categorized.
Index Search Engines
Index search engines are a database of the words on web pages that are automatically updated. These search engines continually "crawl" the web with special software to look for new sites and updates. Since Index search engines are continually updated you are more likely to find the most recent information on these searches.
Meta Search Engines
A Meta search engine searches multiple search engines and returns the most relevant results of each. A meta search engine will search through Directories, Indexes and other Meta search tools for you.
People Search Engines
A People search engine searches for a persons name, address and phone number. Some also provide directions to an address and email information of the person you are looking for.
